The Daoist Spirit of Classical Chinese Medicine Workshop Series!
January 22, 2016 @ 9:30 am - 6:00 pm
$200 – $300
The Spirit of Classical Chinese Medicine with Heather Spangler, MAOM, L.Ac. (NCCAOM) Course Description: The Classical approach to Chinese medicine offers a rich and deeply complementary understanding to the more standardized TCM approach. Many practitioners in the West are currently embracing these ancient teachings not only as touchstones for their own growth and development, but also for improving the outcomes for their patients under their care. This class will be taught in the spirit of the Daoist tradition as transmitted by one of its most notable teachers, Jeffrey Yuen, 88th generation of the Jade Purity tradition. Students will emerge from this series of classes with an overview of the treatment principles, philosophy and application of each of the following meridian systems: Extraordinary Vessels, Longitudinal Luo trajectories, Divergent pathways and Sinew meridians. Each meridian system will be the focus of one of four modules of instruction. *The Sinew meridians (Module one) encompass our physical interaction with our environment. This is the domain of Wei Qi and includes issues of pain, tightness, stiffness, allergies, digestion and mood disorders. In this class, we will review aspects of the pulse, diagnosis and treatment associated with this level. *The Luo vessels (Module two) involve our emotional response with our world, our reaction to our experience as well as the internal factors of disease, including diet and lifestyle and ecological factors such as bacteria, virus and toxins. In this class, we will review aspects of the diagnosis and treatment unique to this level, including an overview of the psychosocial model. *The Divergent meridians (Module three) deal with the terrain of latency and chronicity, involving skeletal, organ or autoimmune conditions and cancer. In this class, we will review aspects of the pulse, diagnosis, treatment and techniques pertaining to this level. *The Extraordinary vessels (Module four) operate on the constitutional level, corresponding to issues at birth or with the DNA, our life’s purpose and identity, human development and evolution. In this class, we will review aspects of the pulse, diagnosis, treatment and the cosmological significance of human life at play in this level.
About the instructor: Heather Spangler Heather Spangler first heard the 88th generation Daoist priest Jeffrey Yuen speak in the Fall of 2007. So impressed with his vast mind and spirit, she has been studying with him ever since. She is a Licensed Acupuncturist (L.Ac.) and herbalist, nationally certified in the US by the NCCAOM (National Council of Colleges of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine). She received her Master’s degree in Acupuncture and Oriental medicine (MAOM) from Daoist Traditions College in Asheville, North Carolina, where Jeffrey Yuen is the Dean of Classical Studies. Her Bachelor’s degree is in Comparative Religion from Dartmouth College. Heather believes that, “one of the gifts that Chinese medicine gives us is a lens through which we can understand our lives and that extends to all aspects of our experience. Sharing this perspective with our patients and fellow practitioners helps us all to live together more vibrantly and thoughtfully.”
