This course is a real eye opener for anyone who wishes to understand how their body functions and how to improve their health in everyday life.  This course is perfect for both beginners and therapists wishing to expand his/her clinical knowledge.

Not only will you be introduced to a unique medical model of the human body from a Chinese medical perspective, this course will also change your outlook on human health and the prevention of diseases.

Traditional Chinese Medicine is an art as well as a science with a unique approach to understanding and treating health conditions, as supported by 4000 years of medical wisdom.

And for those of you who are interested in understanding the wonders of ancient Chinese medical philosophy and how it all ties into your daily lives in a practical way, you will definitely find an abundance of “aha” in this course.

This course will introduce the historical and philosophical contexts, upon which Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is based.

Topics of discussion include the following:

  • History of TCM
  • Concepts and Physiology of Qi (a  central theme in Chinese medical theory)
  • Blood and Body Fluids
  • Essence
  • Shen and Mingmen
  • Yin and Yang and the Five Elements
  • Functions of the Zhang-Fu Organs
  • Six Pathogens/Evils
  • Seven Emotions
  • Way of Life
  • General Organ Patterns
  • The Eight Principles

The etiology, pathology and physiology according to TCM will be outlined to create an understanding of how these eastern theories relate to our body and basic western terminologies such as: organs and causes of diseases.

The curriculum will also include discussions on various patterns of disharmony and their relation to diseases, eastern diagnosis and rationale of treatment in connection to the eastern diagnosis.

This Fundamentals of Traditional Chinese Medicine course is an excellent starting point for any one interested in learning a solid foundations of eastern philosophies and theories.

Students can take this course as a general interest course or part of a full or part time diploma program. Upon completion of this (TCM) Traditional Chinese Medicine course, students can further their knowledge by continuing their studies in any of the following courses or full diploma programs:

TCM Practitioner (Blend of TCM, Japanese, Tung and Tan style Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine, Chinese Nutritional therapy, Tuina massage, Taiji and Qigong)

Richard completed the 4-year Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) program at the Toronto School of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TSTCM. He lectured extensively at TSTCM and Eight Branches Academy of Eastern Medicine in the theory of TCM, Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine. He is also very passionate about his volunteer work with street youth and people with Aids.  Richard has a strong commitment to Tai Chi and Qi Gong, which he has practiced for over 15 years. For the promotion of health and the prevention of disease, he teaches Tai Chi at the downtown YMCA and in the Beaches

In 2008, he started Simple Cures – a Chinese Medicine centre and has been in private practice in The Beaches and Vaughan.  Richard believes that a simple lifestyle promotes better health; he strives to empower his patients to become more proactive with their own healthcare.

Richard speaks fluent English, Cantonese and Mandarin.

Roberto Iusso, R.Ac

Roberto is an honours graduate of the three-year Acupuncture Therapy Diploma program at the Shiatsu School of Canada and also holds certifications in Korean Hand Acupuncture (Level 2) from the Santa Barbara Center for Studies in Oriental Medicine as well as certification in Facial Rejuvenation (aka Cosmetic Acupuncture) from the College of Acupuncture & Therapeutics. He has also completed accredited courses in Medical Qigong and Tuina at the Shiatsu School of Canada and has studied Japanese Nagano/Kiiko style acupuncture therapy as well.

Roberto’s interest in Eastern healing practices began over 20 years ago when he undertook courses in Zen meditation to overcome anxiety and fears related to university examinations. Subsequent meditation practices led him to South Korea where he continued meditation practices, frequently taking courses and workshops at Hwagyesa Zen Temple in Seoul while also teaching ESL.

A knee injury during a Taekwondo training session led him to the discovery of Korean Hand Acupuncture Therapy, which he then learned and utilized over many months of self -treatment to recover from his injury.
